Program Info: The "LINDEN FIRST Employment and Training Center" is a service provided by the city of Linden, NJ, under the leadership of Mayor Derek Armstead and the Linden City Council. The center is managed by Communities In Cooperation Inc. (CIC) and collaborates with local businesses, government organizations, schools, colleges, nonprofits, and faith-based groups. The primary objective of this center is to connect local employers with local employees, exclusively for the residents of Linden. Although the center prioritizes Linden residents, limited services may also be provided to residents of other cities.

Youth & Family Engagement Service Center and Linden First Employment Readiness Center

Our organization offers various programs and services designed to assist families in need. We work closely with our network of partners to connect families with the resources they require while assisting them in navigating complex public assistance systems to guarantee they obtain the support they need. We provide a variety of classes, including parenting, computer literacy, job readiness, financial literacy, life skills, and court-ordered anger management classes.
We have three locations in Newark, Linden, and Roselle, where we collaborate with families, communities, schools, reentry task forces, youth steering committees, drug and alcohol advisory committees, health and mental health coalitions, homeless coalitions, youth violence committees, a juvenile justice multidisciplinary team, county-wide faith-based coalitions, school advisory committees, United Way community groups, and participate in university consortiums and symposiums. Our goal is to ensure that youth, individuals involved in the justice system, and families are striving for success. We aim to involve diverse families in all of our initiatives and promote open communication between families and the community. Our program coordinators and educators engage families in ways that are mutually beneficial, and we incorporate group program decision making and advocacy efforts as needed.
Finally, CIC offers extensive support that takes a systematic approach to engaging families and communities, with a focus on the well-being of the family. These practices are integrated into every aspect of CIC's work, including Youth Empowerment, Justice Services, and Family Strengthening. CIC has established numerous community partnerships to aid in decision-making, understand community issues and concerns, and promote community awareness. As a result, CIC serves as a model of inclusion.
The Communities In Cooperation Community Garden
Discover the serene Charles Street Park, nestled at the intersection of Middlesex Street in Linden, NJ, where we've proudly initiated our community garden project once again. This revival comes courtesy of the 2023 Union County Means Green Community Garden Grant, a beacon of hope amid the challenges posed by COVID-19.
Gratitude extends to the City of Linden, particularly Mayor Derek Armstead, for generously providing us with a space for this transformative garden. With a focus on enhancing nutrition, education, recreation, social interaction, and volunteerism, the garden promises a holistic experience centered around cultivating nourishing food.
In previous years, our collaboration with the First Baptist Church of Linden and the Come Grow With Us initiative bore fruit in the form of a garden comprising twenty beds on the church grounds. The youthful members of CIC and the congregants of First Baptist united their efforts to tend to this thriving garden, fostering a true sense of community
